Basic Roof Styles

There are four major styles of roof. A flat roof is the most common. They're not installed completely flat or they wouldn't permit any runoff. They're more affordable to install and keep up by Pittsburgh contractors and are easier to use.

Skillion Roof

If a single roof plane or flat roof rests on a building in an angle, and one wall higher than the other the roof is no longer flat and is called a skillion roofing.

Gabled Roof

A gabled or gable roofing is the roofing. It looks like an upside-down V, that is not affixed to the wall. The gable is the upside-down V at the top. A basic gable roof features one central ridge.

Hipped Roof

A roof that connects all the walls horizontally , is a hipped roof or hip roof. A normal hipped roof has an underlying ridge, and instead of the triangle of the gable being vertically positioned, it's bent backwards to form two hips or ridges.

Cross Gabled and Cross Hipped

Most houses aren’t just rectangular or square. A L formed or T-shaped house can have two gable roofs, which join a valley on the inside angle. This is a cross gabled roof.

Hipped roofs are exactly the same. The L or T shape may be covered by an overhanging hipped roof.

Mix and Match

Roofs can be a mix of these two basic styles - you might have a gabled or gable roof at an angle of right angles to the hipped roof. Sometimes for decorative purposes the hipped roof as well as the gabled roof are joined on the same plane , in the style known as Dutch Gable.

Other Styles

These basic shapes can be paired with other styles. An A-frame , for instance, an over-exaggerated form of Gable. Another form of gable could be the gambrel roof, which is a barn roof that has a gentle sloped top and then an upward slope. A mansard roof features similar gradual and steep slopes but is hipped instead of gabled.

These styles can have useful applications. Gambrel roofs provide more room for a second storey, and it sheds snow more effectively than from a less steeply sloped roof.

Gabled roofs tend to be more affordable than hipped roofs, but the hipped roofs are more resilient to strong winds. It all comes down to personal taste.
